Haldia Port is currently looking into the possibility of constructing a bridge from Kharagpore to Nayachara Island via Nandigram. Vessels arriving at the port will therefore have to maintain an air draft while entering / exiting.
The Eden Channel was opened on 10 December, 2011 for the entry of MV. PFS Narayana on PSC charter, as a trial run for the depth of the channel, which showed to be between 10-11 meters. This is now being studied further before all vessels can enter the channel.
Haldia Dock Complex’s Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS), controlls inward and outward vessels from Sandheads to the oil jetties and docks through an Automatic Identfication System (AIS), which is a fully computorised system with a pilot on board each vessel on their inward & outward passage. This is an essential piece of technology, as the river has some shallow patches and vessels need to be guided through by the HDC professional pilots.
