Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia with a population of close to four million people. The city is a major economic hub with much of the nation’s automobile industry and a centre for business, technology and finance.
Located at the mouth of the Yarra River and the shores of Port Phillip Bay the city is home to Australia’s largest container and general cargo port – the Port of Melbourne. Handling around 38% of Australia’s container trade, the port services 42 container shipping lines as well as a number of other general cargo carriers, with around 3,200 ship calls a year.
The Port of Melbourne has 30 commercial berths including two modern, purpose-built four-berth international container terminals. Multi-purpose berths handle cargoes ranging from timber to motor vehicles, while specialised berths service dry cargoes and a variety of liquids. Overall, the port handles over $75 million in trade each year.
Melbourne also plays host to visits from world class luxury cruise liners, many of which arrive at Station Pier. The terminal has three berths available for cruise ships, with a total length of 713 metres.
