is home to approximately 2,000 people and plays a major role in the mining and
export industries for the Pilbara region.
Port of Dampier is one of Australia’s largest tonnage ports with exports
totaling 110 million tonnes per annum. More than 4,000 vessels visited the port
in 2007-08, with almost half of the vessel arrivals servicing offshore oil and
gas plants. The main exports through the Port include petrochemical products,
natural gas, iron ore and salt.
Port Authority manages the Dampier Cargo Wharf, the Barge Ramp, the Bulk
Liquids Berth and the Heavy Load Out Facility. Rio Tinto operates the East
Intercourse Island and Parker Point facilities for iron ore exports. Dampier
Salt Limited operates a salt cargo facility on Mistaken Island. Woodside Energy
Limited manages Withnell Bay Terminal on the eastern side of Mermaid Sound.
This services LNG and LPG for the domestic and international markets. Mermaid
Marine Australia operates the Dampier Supply Base consisting of three berths
and storage areas.
