Colon is a province of the Republic of Panama and is of the most important, due to its economic activities, tourism and history. It was founded in 1850, by Americans working on the Panama railroad. It is therefore not surprising that Colon's name derives from the Spanish form of Columbus who discovered America.
Having four modern ports such as Manzanillo International Terminal, Colon Container Terminal, Cristobal Port, and the Cruise Port Colon 2000, Colon is continuing to gain ground in the regional maritime industry. Much of this is due to the investment program in Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT) and Colon Container Terminal (CCT).
The Colon Free Zone was established in 1953 and is a major centre for the distribution and re-exportation of merchandise to Latin America. More than 1,000 established companies generate the visit of huge numbers of tourists and visitors to ships' duty free, only needing to present their passport, which has made an enormous impact on the national economy.
