Inchcape Shipping Services JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) is the 6th largest port in India with the biggest container port. It was named after India’s first Prime Minister and was developed to relieve pressure from the Port of Bombay (Mumbai).

Located in Maharashtra and bordering the Arabian Sea, the port is accessed via the Thane Creek and generally handles cargo traffic originating from or destined for; Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka and most of North India.

The port’s major exports include; textiles, sporting goods, carpets, textile machinery, boneless meat, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. The main imports are; chemicals, machinery, plastics, electrical machinery, vegetable oils, aluminum and other non-ferrous metals.

JNPT has three terminals; JNPCT, NSICT, India’s first privately managed container terminal run by Dubai Ports World and managed under a Build-Operate-Transfer agreement and GTI (Gateway Terminal of India).

Regular co-ordination of vessels movements are being carried out via the latest communication systems in port, VTMS (Vessel Traffic Management Systems) which provide a highly sophisticated radar system for vessel traffic control and safety in the navigational channel and within other areas of the port’s waters.

The port has been recognised with a number of achievements and awards including:

  • ISO 9001:2008 & ISO 27001:2005 certified port
  • ISPS Code compliant
  • Statement of Compliance for successfully implementing the mandatory provisions of International Ship & Port Facility Security.
