Mangalore lies between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghat mountain ranges and is located approximately 350 kilometres west of the state capital, Bangalore.


Mangalore's economy is dominated by agricultural processing and port-related activities. The New Mangalore Port situated in Panambur, was built to replace the existing port in Mangalore city (which is now used for fishing and ferrying small goods) and has become the principal focus for economic development within the region.


New Mangalore Port is the 9th largest port in India, in terms of cargo handling and is well equipped to handle; bulk, liquid chemicals, hazardous cargoes, crude, POL products, heavy lifts, machinery and containers.


The major commodities exported through the port are; iron ore concentrates, pellets and fines, manganese, granite stones, 75% of India's coffee exports and the bulk of its cashew nuts. The major imports of the port are; crude, petroleum products, LPG, wood pulp, timber logs, finished fertilisers, liquid chemicals and containerised cargo.
