Newcastle port is situated approx 200 kilometres north of Sydney and is one of the world’s largest coal export ports. Australia ranks as the world’s largest coal exporter.   Newcastle is Australia’s oldest port and coal represents approx. 90% of the tonnage throughput in the port.  It still remains one of the largest tonnage throughput ports in Australia.

The port consists of various facilities some of which are:

Kooragang Coal Terminal which is located on a 160 hectare site on Kooragang Island. The word “Kooragang” is an Aboriginal word which means a place where birds gather

No.2 Bulk Berth Kooragang

Dry bulk facility leased to P & O Ports. The facility boasts 2 x 18 tonne gantry cranes for handling dry bulk.

Carrington Coal Terminal

This terminal has seen expansion and has increased ship loading capacity to 25 million tonnes per year. The terminal is owned by Port Waratah Coal Services.

Australian Cement Terminal

This multi-cell silo facility, although built back in 1992, is still regarded as state-of- the-art facility.

Cargill Australia Newcastle Tank Terminal

This is a bulk liquid storage and handling facility.

Kooragang Bulk Facilities

No.3. Kooragang wharf is used for handling alumina and petroleum coke being the raw materials required for Tomago Aluminium and Kurri Kurri in the Hydro Kurri Smelter.

Tourism is also very important to Newcastle and it is the gateway to the Hunter Valley Wine region, being the largest in Australia and which comprises approximately 120 wineries and cellar doors. Australia now exports around 48% of its wine product internationally.  It is now estimated that around 2.4 million people visit the region annually.
