The Port of Walvis Bay is often referred to as ‘the land of open spaces’, as it is strategically located half way down the coast of Namibia, offering direct access to principal shipping routes and a natural gateway for international trade.
Walvis Bay is Namibia's largest commercial port, receiving approximately 3,000 vessel calls each year and handling around 5 million tonnes of cargo. It has a sheltered deepwater harbour which benefits from a temperate climate.
Namport's container terminal at the port of Walvis Bay, can accommodate grounds slots for 3,875 containers, with provision for 482 reefer container plug points and can host around 250,000 containers per annum.
The current port limit in the North is on the parallel of latitude 22° 51'.3 S. The chart in use for approaches to Walvis Bay is BA chart number 4134 (INT 2611), dimensions of the berths 1-3 is 154400 and berths 4-8 is 182000. The distance between bollards 1-26, is 19m (i.e. berths 1-3), while from the bollards no 27-86 is 15m (berths 4-8).
