Whangarei is New Zealand's northern-most city with a population of 70,000, and boasts an aquatic playground of 100 beaches, pristine harbours and offshore islands.
There are three port facilities within the confines of Whangarei Harbour. These are at Marsden Point (two) and Portland. Marsden Point has two oil jetties which serve the New Zealand Refining Company. Northport Limited, the operating company for the port of Marsden Point, has a three berth facility up harbour of these jetties.
Marsden Point, a deep water port, lies at the entrance of Whangarei Harbour - 35° 50.0´S, 174° 30´E - Chart NZ 5214. The natural deep water entrance allows ships of 13 metres draft to berth at the port. New Zealand's only oil refinery is also at Marsden Point and can handle tankers up to 150,000 tonnes deadweight with a maximum draft of 15.2 metres.
The location of this port makes it the northern most multi-purpose port in New Zealand, and the closest port to the majority of New Zealand's international markets.
Northport is situated in the province of Northland approximately 145km north of Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. Northland as a province has much to offer international markets particularly in forestry, processed timber products, agriculture, horticultural products and cement, which are all exported through the port.
A wide variety of cargoes can be handled. These include: coal, bulk fertiliser, gypsum, bagged cement, kiwifruit, logs, meat, veneer, triboard, sawn timber, LVL and woodchip.
In addition to Marsden Point, the team also service cruise vessels that visit the Bay of Islands and many vessels arriving from the northern hemisphere make their first contact in New Zealand here.
On the East Coast of Northland, Russell, Opua, Paihia, Kerikeri and Waitangi all make up part of the Bay of Islands - a world renowned tourist destination. Waitangi is also where New Zealand's founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed in 1840.
