Inchcape Shipping Service has been providing quality agency services for the Port of Wilmington, NC for many years and has been providing our principals with the local expertise and service to expedite port calls in the safest and most cost effective manner. 


The Port of Wilmington is strategically located on the U.S. East Coast and is operated by the North Carolina State Ports Authority.  They have readily available modern transit and warehouse facilities, new Panamax container cranes and support equipment, and the latest in cargo management technology.  CSX Transportation provides daily rail service for boxcar, tanker and general cargo services. 


The Port of Wilmington has the capacity to suit our principal’s needs of today, while also being able to project for future growth.  The terminal is located 26 miles from the open sea on the Cape Fear River with a navigable channel depth of 42 ft. MLW.  The Port of Wilmington has nine berths with 6,768 ft. of wharf frontage with contiguous open apron areas up to 300 ft. wide.  The port is a C-TPAT Certified location and is designated as Foreign Trade Zone 66. 


The terminal has open storage dry bulk facilities which can transfer up to 800 tons per hour and covered dry bulk facilities with import conveyor systems for grain and other bulk cargo capable of handling up to 1,000 tons per hour.  The Port of Wilmington is footing a stronghold in the fast-growing Southeast U.S. Market and Inchcape Shipping Service is well positioned to lead the way in terms of agency service.


  • Ocean bar channel depth of 44 ft. MLW and width of 500 ft.
  • Inside harbor channel depth of 42 ft. MLW and width of 500 ft.
  • Anchorage/turning basin depth of 42 ft. MLW and diameter of 1,200 ft.
  • Depth of 38 ft. MLW at berths 1 and 2, 42 ft. MLW at berths 3 through 9
  • Minimum air draft in channel of 164 ft.
  • Mean tide range of 3.8 ft.
  • One multi-purpose bridge crane for bulk, breakbulk, and container, with 115 ft. outreach and 63 ft. backreach at 40 tons equipped for grapple or bucket lifts.
  • Two gantry cranes: One 150-ton and one-100-ton capacity
  • One 30-ton mobile crane
  • 65 Lift trucks with up to 52,000 lb. capacities and special attachments to accommodate a variety of cargoes requiring special attention.
  • 9 Container cranes including 4 new cranes that went into service in April 2007
