The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has started offering night pilotage services for petroleum tanker vessels at the Port of Mombasa, effective from July 1st, 2023.
KPA Managing Director, William Ruto, has stated that the implementation of 24/7 operations at the Kipevu Oil Terminal, will significantly reduce the turnaround time for ships at Mombasa port.
Additionally KPA has suspended the use of the Likoni Floating Pedestrian Bridge for pedestrians as of July 1st, 2023. This decision has been made to ensure uninterrupted and safe passage of vessels through the Kilindini Channel at all times.
Since the introduction of night pilotage services, there has already been an apparent decrease in demurrage costs, leading to a reduction in fuel expenses. The port manager has emphasized the positive impact this change has had on the overall efficiency of port operations.
